Responsible AI Use Requires Principles, Not Just Rules

Rules about AI use change rapidly. A principled framework — grounded in values like honesty, fairness, and respect for learning — provides guidance that remains valid as technology evolves.

Principles for Responsible AI Use

  • Transparency: Be open about when and how you use AI
  • Verification: Verify all AI-generated claims before using them
  • Accountability: Take responsibility for all content you produce, including AI-assisted content
  • Fairness: Be aware of AI biases and their potential impacts
  • Privacy: Protect your own and others' personal information when using AI
  • Learning: Use AI in ways that enhance rather than bypass your own development
Human-in-the-Loop:A design principle requiring human oversight and decision-making at critical points in an AI-assisted process, ensuring accountability and error correction.

AI in Professional Contexts

Professional use of AI raises additional considerations. In journalism, AI-generated content must be verified and disclosed. In medicine, AI diagnostic tools require physician oversight. In law, AI-generated legal research must be verified — several lawyers have faced sanctions for submitting AI-hallucinated citations.

The Mata v. Avianca Case

In 2023, lawyers submitted a legal brief containing AI-generated citations to cases that did not exist. When the court asked for the actual cases, the lawyers could not produce them. The judge sanctioned the lawyers — not the AI. This illustrates the accountability principle: you are responsible for what you submit.

The Verification Imperative

In any high-stakes context — academic, professional, medical, legal — verify every AI-generated claim independently. The cost of an AI error in these contexts is too high to accept without verification.
