Principled Approaches to AI in Academic Work
Rather than asking "What can I get away with?", a principled approach asks: "What am I supposed to be learning? Does this use of AI support or undermine that learning? Am I being honest about how I produced this work?"
If an assignment is designed to develop your ability to construct an argument, using AI to construct the argument defeats the purpose — even if it is technically permitted. The question is not just "Is this allowed?" but "Is this developing the skills I need?"
Disclosure and Transparency
The emerging norm is that AI use should be disclosed. This means being specific: "I used ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas, then wrote the paper myself" is different from "I used ChatGPT to draft the paper, then edited it." Transparency enables instructors to evaluate your actual contribution.
