Propaganda Is Not Just for Dictatorships
Propaganda techniques are used in advertising, political campaigns, social media, and news coverage in democratic societies. Recognizing them is a fundamental media literacy skill.
Classic Propaganda Techniques
- Bandwagon: "Everyone is doing it" — appeal to conformity
- Fear appeal: Exaggerating threats to provoke fear and compliance
- Name-calling: Attaching negative labels to opponents without evidence
- Glittering generalities: Using vague positive words (freedom, values) without substance
- Transfer: Associating a person or idea with respected symbols or authorities
- Plain folks: Presenting leaders as ordinary people to build identification
- Card stacking: Presenting only evidence that supports one side
Propaganda:Information, especially biased or misleading, used to promote a particular political cause or point of view, often using emotional manipulation rather than evidence.
Logical Fallacies
- Ad hominem: Attacking the person rather than their argument
- Straw man: Misrepresenting an opponent's position to make it easier to attack
- False dichotomy: Presenting only two options when more exist
- Slippery slope: Claiming one event will inevitably lead to extreme consequences
- Appeal to authority: Using an authority figure's opinion as evidence regardless of their expertise
- Hasty generalization: Drawing broad conclusions from limited examples
Logical Fallacy:An error in reasoning that makes an argument invalid, even if the conclusion happens to be true.
Identify the Technique, Then Evaluate the Claim
Recognizing a propaganda technique or logical fallacy does not automatically mean the underlying claim is false — it means the argument is not valid. Evaluate the claim on its merits separately from the technique used to present it.
