Information shared online can reach thousands of people in minutes. This power comes with responsibility. Sharing accurate, helpful information can do a lot of good. Sharing false or harmful information can do a lot of damage.
A Framework for Responsible Sharing
- Verify: Have you checked that it is true?
- Consider the source: Is it from a reliable source?
- Think about impact: Could sharing this hurt someone?
- Add context: Does your audience need background information?
- Give credit: Have you attributed the original source?
The Amplification Problem
When you share something — even to say it is wrong — you amplify it. Sometimes the best response to false information is not to share it at all, because sharing it (even critically) can spread it further.
Sometimes the most responsible choice is not to share something. If you are not sure it is true, if it could hurt someone, or if sharing it would amplify harmful content, consider staying silent.
