The DIKW Pyramid

Information scientists describe four levels of understanding: Data → Information → Knowledge → Wisdom. Each level adds more meaning and context to the one below it.

The Four Levels

  1. Data: Raw facts with no context (e.g., "72°F")
  2. Information: Data with context and meaning (e.g., "It is 72°F outside today")
  3. Knowledge: Information connected to other information (e.g., "72°F is comfortable for outdoor activities")
  4. Wisdom: Knowledge applied with judgment (e.g., "I will plan the picnic for today since the weather is ideal")
DIKW Hierarchy:A model showing how data becomes information, then knowledge, then wisdom through the addition of context, connections, and judgment.

Understanding this hierarchy helps you see that raw data is not the same as useful information, and that information alone is not the same as knowledge or wisdom. Critical thinking is what moves you up the pyramid.

Apply It

Next time you encounter data or statistics, ask: What context is needed to make this meaningful? What do I already know that connects to this? What judgment is needed to act on it wisely?
