Not All Studies Are Equal
A study of 10 people is very different from a study of 10,000. A randomized controlled trial is more reliable than a survey. Understanding research methodology helps you evaluate how much weight to give a study's findings.
Types of Research Studies
- Randomized controlled trial (RCT): Participants randomly assigned to groups — gold standard for causation
- Cohort study: Following a group over time — good for long-term effects
- Case-control study: Comparing people with and without a condition
- Cross-sectional survey: Snapshot of a population at one point in time
- Meta-analysis: Statistical analysis combining results from multiple studies
Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT):A study where participants are randomly assigned to treatment or control groups, considered the gold standard for establishing causation.
Key Methodological Questions
- How large was the sample? (Larger = more reliable)
- Was the sample representative of the population?
- Was there a control group?
- Was the study blinded? (Participants and/or researchers did not know who got treatment)
- Who funded the study? (Funding source can create bias)
- Has it been replicated by independent researchers?
Replication Is Key
A single study, even a well-designed one, can produce unusual results by chance. Findings that have been replicated by multiple independent research teams are much more reliable.
