What Is a Logical Fallacy?
A logical fallacy is an error in reasoning that makes an argument invalid, even if the conclusion might be true. Learning to recognize fallacies helps you evaluate arguments more accurately.
Common Logical Fallacies
- Ad hominem: Attacking the person instead of their argument ("You can't trust her — she's biased")
- Straw man: Misrepresenting an argument to make it easier to attack
- False dichotomy: Presenting only two options when more exist ("You're either with us or against us")
- Slippery slope: Claiming one event will inevitably lead to extreme consequences
- Appeal to authority: Using an authority figure's opinion as evidence (especially outside their domain)
- Hasty generalization: Drawing broad conclusions from limited examples
- Post hoc: Assuming that because B followed A, A caused B
Logical Fallacy:An error in reasoning that makes an argument invalid, regardless of whether the conclusion is true.
Identify the Argument Structure
When evaluating an argument, separate the structure from the content. Even if you agree with the conclusion, a fallacious argument is still a bad argument.
