Understand how AI creates text, images, and audio — and why it can be wrong.
AI can now write articles, generate photorealistic images, produce convincing audio, and create video of people saying things they never said. Understanding how AI generates content is now a foundational information literacy skill.
Large language models are trained on enormous datasets of text. They learn statistical patterns — which words tend to follow which other words — and use those patterns to generate text that sounds fluent and coherent. They do not "know" things the way humans do; they predict what text should come next.
One of the most dangerous characteristics of AI-generated text is that it sounds equally confident whether it is accurate or completely fabricated. Confidence is not a signal of accuracy.
