Knowledge is not simply a collection of facts. It is built through a process of evidence-gathering, argument, peer review, and consensus. Understanding this process helps you evaluate claims more critically.
Scientific knowledge is built through a systematic process: observation leads to hypotheses, which are tested through experiments, reviewed by peers, and gradually accepted (or rejected) by the scientific community. This process is self-correcting — errors are eventually identified and corrected.
Before evaluating a claim, identify what type it is. Empirical claims can be tested with evidence. Normative claims involve values and cannot be "proven" in the same way.
Understanding how knowledge is constructed helps you evaluate claims more accurately. A claim that "studies show X" should prompt you to ask: What studies? How many? Were they peer-reviewed? What was the methodology?
