Search Engines Are Not Research Tools

Boolean Operators

Boolean operators let you combine search terms to narrow or broaden your results. The three main operators are AND (both terms must appear), OR (either term can appear), and NOT (exclude a term).

OR: "teenager OR adolescent" — either term can appear
NOT: "mercury NOT planet" — excludes the second term
Quotes: "information literacy" — exact phrase match
Asterisk: educat* — matches educate, education, educator
