When a researcher submits a paper to a peer-reviewed journal, the editor sends it to two or more independent experts in the field. These reviewers evaluate the methodology, data, analysis, and conclusions. They recommend acceptance, revision, or rejection. Only papers that pass this scrutiny are published.
Peer review is not perfect. Reviewers can miss errors, have their own biases, or be influenced by the reputation of authors. Replication — independently reproducing a study's results — is the gold standard for validating research. A single peer-reviewed study is evidence, not proof.
Some journals claim to be peer-reviewed but charge authors to publish without genuine review. These "predatory journals" can make low-quality or fraudulent research appear legitimate. Always check if a journal is indexed in reputable databases.
