The Four Moves of SIFT
- Stop: Pause before reacting or sharing. Recognize emotional triggers.
- Investigate the source: Who is behind this? What is their reputation? Use lateral reading.
- Find better coverage: Look for other sources reporting the same claim. Find the best available evidence.
- Trace claims: Find the original source of a claim, statistic, or quote. Check if it is being represented accurately.
When to Use SIFT vs. CRAAP
SIFT is designed for quick evaluation of digital content — social media posts, news articles, viral claims. CRAAP is better suited for in-depth evaluation of sources for academic research. Both are valuable; the context determines which to use.
You see a shocking statistic shared on social media. Stop — notice your emotional reaction. Investigate — who originally published this? Find better coverage — do other reliable sources report this statistic? Trace — find the original study and check if the statistic is being represented accurately.
