The New Verification Challenge

When AI can generate fluent, authoritative-sounding text on any topic, traditional source evaluation becomes insufficient. You need verification strategies that go beyond surface assessment to check underlying claims against independent sources.

Lateral Reading:A verification strategy: instead of reading deeply within a single source, you immediately open new tabs to search for what others say about the source, the claim, or the author.
  • Stop before accepting or sharing any surprising claim
  • Investigate: Is there a human author with verifiable credentials?
  • Find better coverage: Can you find the same claim in established sources?
  • Trace claims: Follow citations back — do they actually exist?
The Fake Citation Problem

AI models frequently generate fake citations — plausible-sounding academic papers, news articles, or books that do not actually exist. Always verify citations independently before trusting them.

Algorithmic Bias:Systematic and unfair discrimination produced by AI systems, resulting from biased training data or flawed model design. AI can reflect and amplify human biases present in its training data.
