How Language Models Work
Large language models are trained on enormous datasets of text. They learn statistical patterns — which words tend to follow which other words — and use those patterns to generate text that sounds fluent and coherent. They do not "know" things the way humans do; they predict what text should come next.
One of the most dangerous characteristics of AI-generated text is that it sounds equally confident whether it is accurate or completely fabricated. Confidence is not a signal of accuracy.
Deepfakes create a dangerous secondary effect: even authentic video can now be dismissed as "probably a deepfake." This means real evidence of wrongdoing can be denied, and the existence of deepfake technology undermines trust in all video evidence.
