Libraries have thousands of books! How do you find the one you need? Libraries use a special system to organize books so you can find them easily.

What Is a Library?

A library is a place where books, magazines, videos, and other information are organized and kept for people to use. Libraries are free and open to everyone.

How Libraries Are Organized

  • Fiction books are sorted by the author's last name
  • Nonfiction books are sorted by topic using numbers
  • The catalog (a computer or card system) helps you find any book
  • Librarians are experts who can help you find anything
Catalog:A list of all the books and materials in a library, organized so you can search for them.
Ask the Librarian!

Librarians are information experts. If you cannot find what you need, just ask! That is what they are there for.

Libraries also have computers, magazines, and sometimes even e-books you can borrow. Your school library is a great place to start any research project.
