True or Make-Believe?

"Dogs can bark." — True! "Dogs can fly." — Make-believe! Can you tell the difference?

Facts vs. Make-Believe

A fact is something that is true and can be checked. Make-believe is something that is invented or imaginary. Stories can be fun, but it is important to know the difference between a story and real information.

Fact:Something that is true and can be proven or checked.
Fiction:A story that is made up and not real.

How Can You Tell?

  • Ask: "Could this really happen?"
  • Ask: "Has someone proved this is true?"
  • Look for pictures or videos that show it is real
  • Ask a trusted adult or check a reliable book
Slow Down!

When you read or hear something surprising, slow down and ask: "Is this a fact or a story?" It is okay to say "I'm not sure — let me check!"

Sometimes people share things that are not true by accident. They might have read something wrong or misunderstood. That is why checking information is so important.
