Where Does Information Come From?
Explore different sources of information and how to choose the right one.
If you wanted to know how to take care of a pet fish, would you ask a friend who has never had a fish, or read a book about fish? The book is probably a better source!
What Is a Source?
A source is where information comes from. Just like water comes from a faucet or a river, information comes from a source. Different sources are good for different questions.
Types of Sources
- 📚 Books — great for learning facts about a topic
- 👩🏫 Experts — people who know a lot about one thing
- 🌐 Websites — fast, but you need to check if they are trustworthy
- 📰 Newspapers and magazines — news and current events
- 🎥 Videos and documentaries — show you things visually
Your school librarian is an expert at finding great sources. When you have a question, ask them! They love helping students find the right information.
Picking the Right Source
Not every source is right for every question. If you want to know about dinosaurs, a science book is better than a comic book. If you want to know today's weather, a weather website is better than a book written ten years ago.
"How do volcanoes erupt?" → A science book or educational video. "What time does the library open?" → The library's website or a phone call. "How do you feel about your new teacher?" → Only you can answer that!
