Professional researchers use special search techniques to find exactly what they need. Learning these tricks will save you hours of searching!
Advanced Search Techniques
- "Exact phrase" — use quotation marks for exact phrases
- site:edu — search only educational websites
- filetype:pdf — find PDF documents
- -word — exclude a word from results (e.g., "jaguar -car" to find the animal, not the car)
- OR — find pages with either term (e.g., "dolphins OR porpoises")

Evaluating Search Results
The first result is not always the best. Look at the URL, the title, and the description before clicking. Ask: Is this from a credible source? Is it relevant to my question? Is it recent enough?
Use Multiple Search Engines
Different search engines return different results. If you cannot find what you need on one, try another. For academic research, Google Scholar is excellent.
