What Fact-Checkers Do

Professional fact-checkers at organizations like Snopes, PolitiFact, and FactCheck.org investigate claims and rate them as true, false, or somewhere in between. You can use their methods too!

Fact-Checking Strategies

  1. Identify the specific claim being made
  2. Find the original source of the claim
  3. Check what experts in the relevant field say
  4. Look for corroboration from multiple independent sources
  5. Check established fact-checking websites
  6. Consider the context — is important information missing?
Corroboration:Finding multiple independent sources that confirm the same information.
Trace It Back

When you see a claim, try to trace it back to its original source. Many viral claims turn out to be misquotes, taken out of context, or completely fabricated when you trace them back.

Fact-checking takes practice, but it gets faster with experience. The most important habit is to pause before sharing and ask: "Do I actually know this is true?"
