How Information Changes Over Time
Did you know that information can change? Scientists learn new things, discoveries are made, and sometimes what we thought was true turns out to be different. That is why it is important to check when information was written!
Old Information vs. New Information
A book written 50 years ago might say things that are no longer true. For example, scientists used to think Pluto was a planet. In 2006, scientists decided Pluto is actually a "dwarf planet." A very old book would still call it a planet!
- Science information changes as new discoveries are made
- Health information changes as doctors learn more
- Technology information changes very quickly
- History information stays the same — past events do not change
How to Check If Information Is Current
- Look for a date — when was this written or last updated?
- For science and health topics, look for recent sources
- Ask a librarian or teacher if you are not sure
The date matters most for science, health, technology, and current events. For topics like ancient history or classic literature, older sources can still be very good!
